Joan Gloria Wilkinson

Joan Gloria Wilkinson of Tiverton born November 25, 1930 passed away January 27, 2022 at Chesley Hospital in her 92nd year. Predeceased by her parents Walter Wilkinson and Cecelia Eva Pearl Lascelles, her son William, brothers Walter, Harry, Robert, Lorne and George and sisters Lillian, Peggy, Edythe, Jean, Babsy and Donna. Despite contracting polio at the age of 17 which took away the use of one arm and hand, Joan lived a full and independent life up to the end. She learned how to drive, knit and do whatever chores needed doing around her home. At an early age Joan found work at a telephone answering service business in Ottawa which she eventually took over. Upon retiring she moved to Tiverton to be near her sister Jean Whelen. Quick to make friends but preferring solitude Joan kept in touch with family and friends over the phone lines. She could be relied on to take care of your dog when you were away on vacation and thrived from the daily routines she maintained and from the companionship she enjoyed with her cockatiel “Sam”. Sadly Sam died in 2021 after having been with Joan for almost 27 years. With Sam gone Joan’s routine seemed broken and her home silent and empty. It wasn’t long before her health deteriorated, she lost her independence and she was called Home. Left to mourn her passing are many nieces, nephews, friends, neighbours and her brother-in-law Donald May of Russell, Ontario. She now has a skip in her step, can read to her heart’s content and can grab something with one hand and open it with the other.
