Vere Oliver "Shaun" Thompson Obituary

Our family is deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Shaun.  He died peacefully on December 30, 2021, at the Southampton Care Centre.

Born in 1936, Shaun grew up in Sussex, England. He obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Queen’s University Belfast, where he met his future wife, Margaret Victoria Abel. They were married in 1964 in Maidstone, Kent.

After working for several years as an engineer in Chester, England, Shaun and Margaret immigrated to Canada in 1970 and eventually settled in Port Elgin.   Shaun worked for over 25 years at the Bruce Heavy Water Plant in various roles, eventually becoming a Production Manager.

As an active member of the Waterside men’s quintet and the Port Elgin Centennial Singers, Shaun was an enthusiastic singer.  He was heavily involved in volunteering in the community, playing a major part in the Huron Shore Run. He and Margaret were avid tennis players and devoted gardeners.  He was also an accomplished woodworker and birder.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Margaret, his children, Patrick (Diana Carrillo Marrufo), Kevin (Rebecca Netley) and Oliver (Doloris Hrynkiw) and his grandchildren Alexander, Amelia and Sarah Netley-Thompson and Aria and Tamara Thompson.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Southampton Care Centre for their generous support through Shaun’s final years.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Shaun’s memory to Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation.

Due to ongoing COVID restrictions, a private memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 and a celebration of life and interment will take place in the summer. Family and friends wishing to view the memorial service may do so on facebook @BrownFamilyFH or in the service details below.

Those we love don’t go away,

They walk beside us every day,

unseen, unheard, but always near,

Still loved, still missed and very dear.
